AROUND £40,000 is going to be sunk into revamping hundreds of street name plates across Worcester - with people being asked to 'name and shame' the worst ones.
Council chiefs have revealed plans to double the planned investment into replacing and renewing old, tatty signs letting Worcester down - with 400 streets due to benefit.
The bigger kitty means 200 street signs will get upgrades this year and another 200 in 2016/17, twice as many as first planned.
Worcester City Council says it will pay special attention to areas linked with heritage, and will also focus on missing signs or those looking particularly tired.
But people across Worcester are being urged to help the makeover effort - the first serious spending on street signs in a generation - while the cash is there.
The city council's Conservative cabinet is meeting this coming Tuesday to endorse the new spending, which is double the original commitment of £20,000.
Councillor Andy Roberts, the cabinet member for cleaner and greener, said: "The advice I got was that £20,000 would make a difference, but it wouldn't do the job the way we want it done.
"To really make a noticeable difference it'd need another £20,000 - street signs are more than just a name on a road, it's like the name on your house.
"We're very enthusiastic about it, we reckon £40,000 would make one heck of a difference and it'll be open to people to speak to their councillors about."
The authority says the money will be spent via requests from both the public and elected councillors until it is all gone.
The funds are coming from the council's New Homes Bonus - money from central Government as a reward for allowing new property building in the city.
