BRAVE three-year-old Georgie Gibbs will be having a hero's welcome when she returns to Worcester this week.

Little Georgie is expected to return to her home in St John's on Thursday having spent nearly three weeks recovering from life-changing surgery at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.

Georgie, who has spastic diplegic cerebral palsy, underwent a selective dorsal rhizotomy on Monday, February 22 and has been undergoing intensive physiotherapy ever since.

To coincide with her homecoming, big sister Ella has organised a special fundraising showing of Big Hero 6 at Odeon Worcester on Sunday (March 13).

Mum Clare, who has been staying in Bristol with Georgie, said the whole family were excited about being reunited.

"It's been three weeks but it feels like three years.

"Georgie is back to her normal self and is bossing everyone around.

"I'm a bit apprehensive about having to do all the physio work - after the surgery the consultant turned to me and said "I've done my part, now it is up to you"."

Big sister Ella has been busy putting the finishing touches to the event she has been organising for several months before her sister was given an operation date in the UK.

Tickets cost £3, available now from the cinema in Foregate Street, for the 11am screening and children can come in fancy dress.

James Taundry, Odeon Worcester cinema host who has helped organise the event, said: "This special cinema morning event is actually the brainchild of Georgie's big sister Ella, who wanted a chance to watch a great family film with her friends while also doing her part for Help Georgie.

"Odeon Worcester actually got involved thanks to Worcester News, who contacted us and helped get the first meeting off the ground, during which Ella made her ideas known.

"From then it was just a case of waiting for everything to fall into place so we could realise those ideas.

"This is actually a dream come true in a way - I know that when I was a little film fan I wanted nothing more than to be able to hold big cinema events for everyone I knew, and now we're doing exactly that for Ella and all her friends and family.

"I really hope that lots of families are free to join us in this event, not only so that we can help make Ella's plan a success but also so that we can help her sister in a time of need."

Ella has designed the tickets and posters which were printed by Modus Print and Georgie will hopefully be putting in a post-operation appearance to thank everyone for their support.

Mum Clare said: "We've had a few people ask why we are still fundraising because Georgie has had an operation and that is a completely valid question.

"This was Ella's idea for her sister so we wanted to honour it for her.

"Physio is very expensive and we are lucky enough to get donations which will help with the sessions which are not available on the NHS.

"In the future we would like to do something to help other children, perhaps Help Georgie Help Others."

"We'd like to say a big thank you to James and the Odeon as well as Modus for helping make Ella's event a reality. We're really looking forward to it."

The family are currently hoping to build a wooden structure for Georgie to do her physio work without distraction.

Any company who is able to give the family a competitive price is asked to get in touch by emailing

Mrs Gibbs added: "We're finding she becomes easily distracted and won't do her physio so we are hoping to make a room which is away from the house and free from distractions and hopefully we will be able to open it up to other children in the future too.

"We have the fundraising money but people worked damn hard for that to go on physiotherapy so we want to make sure we get the best price."
