A DRUNK man who assaulted two officers outside a Worcester nightclub was asked if he had no respect for police by a court clerk.

Nathan Mathews admitted the two assaults after he was thrown out of Bushwackers in Worcester when he appeared before city magistrates on Friday.

He claimed in court he had been assaulted by doorstaff which was why he was angry.

The 20-year-old of Purshull Green Lane, Elmbridge, Droitwich admitted assaulting two constables in the execution of their duty – PC Rees and PC Edmunds – at around 3.30am on February 28.

Jackie Rogers, prosecuting, said both officers saw Mathews being ejected from the club in the city’s Trinity Street and he was described as ‘shouting at doorstaff’.

Mrs Rogers said: “Mr Rees heard Mr Mathews shouting ‘come on, you will have it!’ PC Rees approached Mr Mathews who had grabbed hold of the railings and was kicking the wall.”

Mathews appeared to calm down when he realised there were police officers present said Mrs Rogers.

However, he later knocked PC Rees’s arm away and ‘pushed him hard in the upper chest area’ and then did the same to PC Edmunds, pushing him with an open palm to the chest.

Mrs Rogers said: “Mr Mathews walked off and attempted to climb over the railings in an attempt to get back in (to Bushwackers).

"Both PCs have taken hold of Mr Mathews and he has been removed from the railings and taken to the ground.

He was arrested at that point for assaulting both police officers. They had no injuries.”

Mathews, who represented himself, said he had nothing to say about the assaults but was challenged by the clerk of the court, Huw Jones, who said: “Have you no respect for the police?”

Mathews said: “I was very intoxicated. I was angry because I was kicked out of the club. I was punched in the face multiple times by one of the bouncers.

“I came out enraged. When I’m sober I’m not an angry person at all. When I have a drink my emotions come out.”

Before this incident Matthews had no previous convictions the court was told.

Magistrates fined him £100 for each assault, ordered him to pay costs of £135 and a victim surcharge of £20.

No compensation was offered to the officers on the grounds neither sustained any injuries.
