A NEW chairman has been elected for Wychavon District Council.

Wychavon councillors elected that Frances Smith should take over the role from outgoing chairman Val Wood.

The appointment was made at Wychavon District Council's annual council meeting on Wednesday evening.

Cllr Wood said: "It has been a pleasure to represent Wychavon this last year, especially as I was the first ever Pershore councillor to become chairman, although hopefully not the last.

"It also opened my eyes to the community spirit that is alive and well making this district one of the most sought after places to live.

"I am sure that the new chairman, Frances Smith, will have an interesting and enjoyable year and I thank her for her support as my vice chairman."

During her time as chairman, Cllr Wood raised more than £2,000 for her chosen charities, which were Worcestershire Wildlife Trust and Dementia Care.

Cllr Smith, a Conservative who represents Little Hampton, said: "Being elected Chairman of Wychavon District Council is something special and a great honour for two reasons.

"When I worked here I never imagined in my wildest dreams that I would wear this chain, and secondly I believe John and I are the first husband and wife team to hold this office, John having being Chairman in 2002/2003.

"My theme for my year is ‘working within the community’, and I am more than happy to promote any section of our community – be it the businesses, voluntary groups, the young and the elderly – who do so much to make Wychavon a district to be proud of."

The chairman’s consort for public engagements will be her husband, John Smith, OBE.

Her vice-chair will be Cllr Elizabeth Eyre, who represents Broadway and Wickhamford.

Cllr Smith's charity this year is St Richard’s Hospice.

She is also hoping to congratulate Wychavon residents who are turning 100, and urges those with upcoming centenaries to get in touch.
