WORCESTERSHIRE residents are being encouraged to walk their way to better health during national walking month.

The campaign is reminding people of the benefits of walking, particularly those who struggle to reach the recommended 10,000 steps a day.

Walking just 20 minutes a day burns up to 100 calories, and is better for the environment as carbon dioxide is not being released from another car on the road.

The campaign reminds people even if it’s not practical to walk to work, they should at least get fresh air during a lunch break. The improved weather and lighter nights also provide an opportunity for people to get out and about after work.

Dr Carl Ellson, chief clinical officer at NHS South Worcestershire Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Walking is simple, free and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier.

“Regular walking has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, stroke, and some cancers.”
