The A4440 has been re-opened following a crash earlier this afternoon.

A serious crash involving three cars on the A4440 led to a road closure at Powick Island at around 12.45pm.

A woman was airlifted to hospital with a suspected broken leg after being trapped in her car for almost an hour before the Hereford and Worcester fire service released her by removing the roof.

The road re-opened about 3.25pm.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “The driver of one car, a woman in her 30s, was trapped in the vehicle due to the damage caused in the collision.

"She was conscious and breathing and whilst the fire service worked to cut her free from the wreckage, the ambulance staff worked together to assess her and found she had sustained a suspected fractured leg."

“The woman was given pain relief and fluids before being immobilised with a neck collar, spinal board and pelvic splint and flown to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

“A second driver, a man in his 60s, was assessed on scene and was taken to Worcester Royal Hospital as a precaution.”

An air ambulance was on the scene as well as two ambulances and a paramedic.

The Carrington Bridge is closed after the crash involving a black Kia and a Mitsubishi that took place at 12.45pm on the A4440, close to Powick Roundabout.

The Highways agency is currently cleaning up the road after a fuel leak.

It is reported that the road will be closed for approximately three hours between Ketch and Powick roundabouts due to the incident, the A449 is open but with delays.

The A38 in Kempsey - where a void has been discovered under the road - will remain open under temporary lights until the A4440 Temeside Way re-opens.

Heavy traffic has already built up on the main A449 road in both Malvern and Worcester directions due to the closure of the A4440.
