WORCESTER'S MP has voiced his delight over the looming demolition of the city's derelict old Zig Zag nightspot - saying it cannot come soon enough.

Robin Walker has told the Worcester News the issue has dogged much of his time as an MP, with people in St John's lobbying him about it for years.

He also revealed how at one point, his office tried to get Sainsbury's involved in an attempt to resolve the impasse over the site's future.

Last week businessman Peter Styles secured planning permission to raze the eyesore to the ground, with a new snazzy complex due to be built featuring 12 apartments and retail.

Mr Walker said: "It's a huge relief to see that something is finally being done because it's long overdue.

"This has been raised with me many times by St John's residents and the traders' association, two or three years ago we even had to take it up with Sainsbury's to try and find out who owns the land.

"It's been very tough on the traders near there and particularly the butchers, imagine trying to run your businesses with that so close by.

"For years people have waited for this, so it's very good news."

He also told the Worcester News he wanted something done about the former Images nightclub, another once-popular spot for revellers which has now long closed.

The building, opposite The Hive in The Butts, nearly became a lapdancing venue in 2013 before the suggestion was scrapped after public outrage.

At the time investor Ashvin Patel decided to open his raunchy venue, called Black Cherry, in Lowesmoor instead.

Despite hopes of it becoming a new nightclub for the over-30s last year ran by Hereford-based outfit Mamma Jammas, the deal collapsed due to a dispute between the firm and the building's third party owner.

It means the building, which was last in use as the Funk Club in 2012, is still gathering dust despite being so close to the gold-cladded Hive.

Mr Walker said: "It's a bit of an eyesore and the next thing I'd want to see brought back into use is that.

"If there are people out there considering re-developing sites in Worcester I'd hope they look at that."
