A SPECIAL flag is flying from the top of the Council House in Avenue Road, Malvern, to raise awareness of the UK’s reliance on the Merchant Navy.

Malvern Hills District Council responded to a call from the Seafarers UK charity and the Merchant Navy Association for the navy’s Red Ensign flag to be flown on public buildings and landmark flagstaffs.

Council chairman Chris O’Donnell raised the flag to say thank-you to the seafarers, and vice-chairman Andrea Morgan also joined the ceremony.

Coun O’Donnell said: “It was an honour to be a part of this special day, as a mark of respect and honour for the brave men and women who made sacrifices during both world wars.

"It is a great opportunity for all local councils and authorities throughout the UK to participate together in a show of support and appreciation for Merchant Navy seafarers everywhere."
