A SCHOOL may be built on the site of a former Park and Ride site in the city.

City councillors will decide whether to sell three acres of the five-acre property, in Perdiswell, Worcester, at a closed policy and resources committee meeting on Tuesday.

The land would be sold to the Government to enable the construction of a 420-pupil primary school, run by The Rivers Church of England Academy Trust.

There would also be 26 full-time nursery places at the North Worcester Primary Academy, which has received approval from the Department of Education.

Cllr Andy Stafford, county and city councillor for Claines, said the academy will help to address the pressure on school places in his ward.

He said: "You have children travelling across the city to go to schools. Last year Northwick Manor [primary school] took on an extra class.

"Northwick Manor is a great school and it will be the same Trust running it, so it should be a great school.

“I’m quite confident it will go through on Tuesday [at the policy and resources committee meeting].”

Cllr Stafford described the sale as a 'big step forward' which would reduce the council's maintenance bill and business rates for the site.

“It’s good news for the city. All young children should be able to go to a school near where they live," he said.

“The school has been given permission and the go-ahead by the Government but finding the right site was the next big challenge.

“This site makes perfect sense as it has good links onto the main road. It saves pressure being put on green belt land or playing fields."

Kate Brunt, CEO of The Rivers Church of England Academy Trust, thanked Worcester City Council for their 'invaluable' support in finding a suitable site for the school.

She said: “We would also like to thank parents and the local community for their overwhelming support.

"As a Trust we are extremely excited at the prospect of opening a brand new school that will meet the needs of north Worcester and offer an outstanding education for all.”

Worcester City Council would sell the land to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.
