MALVERN's latest public work of art has been officially unveiled in Rose Bank Gardens.

The Lark Ascending sculpture was commissioned by the Autumn in Malvern Festival and created by Walenty Pytel, the world-renowned metal sculptor who also made the nearby buzzards.

About 30 people gathered in the garden for the unveiling of the sculpture, which was carried out by distinguished town resident Dr Peter Mayner.

Peter Smith, founder and artistic director of the festival, said: “Peter Mayner has given loyal service to the local community, support to the arts in the area, and not least, to medical charities.

He was chief medical officer for P and O, and though a civilian, remained on the liner, Canberra, during the Falklands War with the team of military surgeons and nurses. For his service to the nation and the community, it is therefore fitting that he be asked to unveil the sculpture''.

The event, organised by Malvern Town Council, included a reading of the winning poems in a schools competition, written by Anna Cai and Charlie Morris.

Cynthia Palmer, mayor of Malvern, said: “I am absolutely delighted to accept this new sculpture on behalf of the people of Malvern, and hope that it brings enjoyment to those walking through the gardens. I’m also so pleased that Anna and Charlie could join us and share their poems, as they were a true pleasure to listen to. We have some very talented young students in our town.”
