Soon this scene will be full of engines and trains – but now it’s all diggers. And cranes.

Work on the new Worcestershire Parkway railways station is moving apace, with plenty of heavy plant machinery on the site to the west of the city.

The footprint of the station has been cleared and levelled and groundworks have been finished, so now the actual buildings are being constructed.

The aim is to create a new railway station and allow railway operators to improve services t between the city centre stations and destinations like London, Birmingham, Gloucester and Bristol.

One of the key priorities for Worcestershire County Council, which is funding the project, is to hook Worcester into the Cross Country network which runs from the south west, through Birmingham to the north east of England.

A spokesman said: “Despite the services passing through the very heart of the County, rail access is only viable by making connections at Birmingham New Street and Cheltenham Spa. This must be addressed as it severely restricts the County's economic relationship with other parts of the United Kingdom.”

When completed the station should feature a car park with up to 500 spaces, including disabled spaces, one platform on the North Cotswold line and two on the Birmingham to Bristol line, all of which will be fully accessible.

There will also be secure bicycle and motor cycle parking and charging points for electric cars, as well as a bus stop and taxi pick up point.

The station will be a few miles west of junction 7 on the M5 accessible from the B4084 which is also being widened

Richard Parry drives to work in Worcester every day. He said: “I’d probably quite like to use the train, maybe at least a couple of days a week. It would give me a break from driving, and I’d like to help cut down on congestion in the city as well.

“The times of trains aren’t really helpful at the moment. But I might be interested in driving to the parkway station and then travelling into the city from there on the train if it was frequent and quick enough. Even though I’d still have to drive there, it would save me sitting in traffic in the city centre, which is the slowest party of my journey.”

Work on the site is expected to be completed in about a year.
