AN author has told school pupils how he writes his own stories - despite not being a very good reader as a child.

Kevin Brooke, patron of reading at Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College, spoke to two classes of Year 7 students about how he now reads extensively and has had his books published.

His book, Jimmy Cricket, inspired the students, and although based on the sport, it appealed to all pupils as troubled Jimmy finds his way with a few setback and a first love.

Mr Brooke said he enjoyed encouraging children to read books of all sorts from a variety of authors, and believes that there is a reader in everyone.

Linda Bromyard, college librarian, said: "Meeting authors is always beneficial and having an author connected to the College mean the students see him regularly and can build up good reading relationships."

The visit took place on Friday, April 27.
