A MOTORCYCLIST who died in a crash on a dangerous road has been named.

Darryl Overton, aged 41, from Cheltenham, died in a crash involving a Land Rover on Guarlford Road, Malvern.

Police arrested a 38-year-old man on suspicion of death by dangerous driving after the death of Mr Overton, who worked at Chipping Norton Fire Station.

Mark Ames, Fire Brigades Union brigade secretary for Oxfordshire, said: "My thoughts are with his family. He will be sorely missed at Chipping Norton Fire Station."

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service History Group described Mr Overton as a 'very kind and friendly guy' in a Facebook post.

Firefighters, police officers and air and land ambulances responded to the crash on June 9.

Residents are now calling for action over Guarlford Road, which is commonly known as the 'Guarlford straight'.

Paul Sparrey, aged 46, who lives on the road, said: “It’s clear from all the incidents over the years that something needs to be done.

“Surely it only takes one fatality [for action to be taken], but it’s not always the case. It’s an official racetrack.

“If anyone is travelling at speed there’s a potential for a problem. Even though it’s 60-miles-per-hour, a lot of cars don’t follow that.

“If it was 40 or 50 and possibly had a camera there that might help.”

Councillor Alan Amos, county council cabinet member for roads, said: “The safety of pedestrians and drivers using our roads is extremely important to us.

“We are continuing investigations following a serious crash on Guarlford Road in Malvern earlier this month and working closely with the police. As the investigation is ongoing, we can’t comment further at this stage.”

Police have set up signs on the road asking anyone who saw the crash to contact them on 101 quoting incident number 701s of June 9.

Harriett Baldwin, MP for West Worcestershire, said she was aware of the incident but had not been contacted by locals about it.
