THERE were celebrations all round at a Droitwich care home last month, as a devoted couple celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary.

Harry, 102, and Margaret Tanfield, 93, celebrated 70 years of marriage surrounded by family and close friends at Westmead Residential Care Home, where they both now live.

It was love at first sight for Margaret and husband-to-be Harry who met by chance, at a dance hall in Birmingham.

Harry’s cricket match fortunately finished early that evening, meaning he had time to stop by the dance hall – catching Margaret’s eye.

Working in Timpsons, she was just 21 when she met the Moseley-based furniture salesman.

The loving pair were married on June 27, 1948 and honeymooned in the Isle of Wight.

At his anniversary party last Wednesday at the Westmead Close care home, Harry recalled the weather on his honeymoon was fantastic, as it is at the moment.

He said the newly-weds were able to go swimming every day.

When first married, the couple lived in Maypole, Birmingham, and had two children – Penny and Guy.

The Tanfield family-of-four has now blossomed to four generations with six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren, ranging in age from six-months-old to 21, with two more on the way.

Harry, one of the oldest people in the county, lived independently with his wife – as her full-time carer – until they recently both moved into Westmead.

The Sanctuary Care home’s manager Michelle Bisseker said: “Harry and Margaret are a true example of devotion and we are so honoured to have been able to celebrate this very special day with them and their family.”

Sanctuary Care is celebrating its 20th anniversary delivering care to its residents, with a series of events across its more than 100 homes in England and Scotland.

It was established in 1995 and is an exempt charity under the Charities Act 1993, regulated by the Regulator for Social Housing.
