THE opening of a new village shop has moved on step closer, after it was revealed that sales of shares in a new community-owned enterprise have exceeded all expectations.

More than 350 stakeholders have subscribed to a recent share offer by Lower Broadheath Community Shop Limited.

The offer has netted £39,860 for the Community Benefit Society, which is owned by the residents of Lower Broadheath in Worcestershire.

It was set up after the closure of the local shop and post office in May 2017 in a bid to create a new shop to be owned and run by the local community.

Grants from The Big Lottery Fund Awards for All and the Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation and backing from the Post Office have taken the total secured to date to almost £80,000.

Shareholders met at a public meeting last week and voted to release capital and the shop’s cabin has now been ordered.

It will be three months before the structure arrives on site in the garden of The Bell Inn on Martley Road.

The shop will be fitted out by local tradespeople and volunteers and community-minded locals are being sought to help with a variety of jobs.

Mark Glossop, management committee chairman, said: “Achieving our funding goal within twelve months of launching proposals was a terrific achievement and demonstrates the community’s desire for a new village shop.”

He added: “But the hard work is only just beginning.

“Volunteer roles will include administration and book-keeping, maintenance and stock control.

"Opening the shop seven days a week requires a bank of volunteers as well as a leader or two to organise teams and shifts.

"The only paid position will be a part-time shop manager.”

Mr Glossop added: “The main qualification for people wishing to volunteer in the shop is a smile; beyond that, all training and support will be given.”

The public are welcome to attend the next meeting at Broadheath Village Hall at 8pm on September 19 for further information.
