FORMER Worcestershire MP Sir Peter Luff has spoken of the support he has received from from colleagues and friends after revealing that he is living with Parkinson's disease.

He has been inundated with messages of sympathy and support since he went public about the condition a few days ago.

"I've had messages on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, texts and emails, all wishing me the best.

"When I made my announcement, I did fear that I might get one or two snide comments, but nothing like that has happened. Every message that I have has was friendly and supportive."

Among the well-wishers was former Labour Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, from Malvern, who tweeted: "Sorry to hear that and very best wishes to @PeterJLuff "

And Matt Hancock, the secretary of state for health and social care, tweeted: "I'm so sorry to learn the wonderful @sirpeterluff has been diagnosed with Parkinson's. I admire his bravery going public. So much more to do to help those living with Parkinson's."

Former Worcester Labour MP Mike Foster said: "We crossed swords many times; exchanged harsh words too.

"But very best wishes to a former Worcestershire colleague ⁦@PeterJLuff⁩ I know him well enough to recognise he will not allow this to stop him."

Sir Peter said: "It has been moving to receive such tributes from friends and former adversaries."

Sir Peter, aged 63, was MP for Worcester from 1992 until 1997, and for Mid Worcestershire from 1997 to 2015, when he retired. He is now chairman of the Heritage Lottery Fund.
