SIR – In March 2017, I wrote to our MP regarding the government’s intention to ban local authorities from running their own bus services.
Our MP believes that such bus services would ‘stifle the private sector investment that has made such a significant difference’.
In an article about Green Party councillors’ petition against cuts to bus services, Councillor John Raine was quoted as saying that ‘we have to thank the deregulation of bus services quite some years ago for this dreadful state of affairs – and the more recent banning by government of local authorities from operating services in competition with commercial operators’. (Worcester News, August 9).
People need their local bus service so that they can get to work, attend appointments, do their shopping, etc. I urge other local politicians to oppose the bus cuts and support the right of local authorities to run their own bus services.
This is about putting the needs of people over profit.
