PLANS for 61 new homes on greenfield land, a stone's throw away from Worcestershire Royal Hospital, have been approved.

The Elan Homes development wills it on land off Newtown Road between Ronkswood Hill Meadows Local Nature Reserve and Aconbury Orchard and behind houses in Aconbury Close and Chesterton Gardens.

Of the 61 homes, 24 will be designated as affordable housing - the obligatory 40 per cent target for the city council.

Concerns were raised by a number of neighbours during the consultation process includin flooding to homes and gardens, the problem of more cars on Newtown Road and the use of the estate as a car park for patients and staff at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

Councillor Lynn Denham welcomed the 24 affordable homes as well as the electric car charging points in some of the homes. Council planners did not feel it was 'necessary' to force the developer to extend the charging points to all of the homes.

Councillor Chris Mitchell, chairman of the planning committee, said: "It is a balance of what we can have and can't have and what we would like to have."
