FAMILIES can time-travel to Medieval Worcester and enjoy an interactive array of activities at the Commandery today, on this bank holiday Monday.

The event, which began yesterday, includes a variety of activities consisting of tournament games, a living history camp with Amicorum re-enactors, as well as medieval combat and traditional crafts.

Visitors to the Grade I listed building, which dates back to the 11th century, can meet medieval characters, complete the ‘squire’s quest’ trail and watch black powder demonstrations.

Edward Cartwright, aged nine, of Drakes Broughton, was there on Sunday. He said: “There are a lot of activities you can do by yourself and feel what it was like years ago.”

Kai Cannon, of medieval living history group Wythe Retinue, who was portraying a scriven, said: “I think it is a a fantastic event in a brilliant venue.

“It is important to learn about the past because if you don’t learn about it you might not be able to recognise what is going wrong in the future.”

Sarah Bourne, the Commandery’s building co-ordinator, said: “It is really good to see the Commandery brought to life in its former medieval glory.

“The event depicts the role of St Wulstan’s Hospital within the building and medieval life in the gardens with living history group Amicorum.

“There’s plenty to see and do for all ages which includes talks on medieval torture, arming a knight, gruesome clues and more.”

The Commandery is ready to take visitors back to a time when the beautiful historic building once housed medieval monks and miracles, with opportunities to discover its fascinating history.

The event continues today 10am to 5pm.
