A DRINK driver who returned from Japan due to mental health issues was suffering from a 'crisis' when he was caught.

Samuel Aldis, of Bath Road, Worcester, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and not being insured.

Aldis moved back into his parent's home a month ago after struggling with depression and anxiety in Japan.

Roger Bleazard, prosecuting, said police officers stopped Aldis after he clipped a kerb in Bromyard Road, Worcester, on August 12.

Gary Harper, defending, said Aldis became anxious and depressed while working in Japan.

He added: "His partner encouraged him to return to this country.

"He went to live with his parents. His family was away [and] he had a panic attack.

"The only person he thought he could talk to about that was a friend in Dines Green. He was driving to find his friend to help him out with the panic attack.

"He believed he would have been insured on his father's insurance, that was not the case."

Mr Harper said the defendant had been stressed in Japan, where people commit suicide due to overworking.

He added that Aldis was experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the offence.

Aldis had 84 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

Worcester Magistrates Court told him to pay a £120 fine for drink driving and an £80 fine for not being insured.

The court also banned him from driving for 20 months and ordered him to cover the £135 court costs.

He appeared in court on Thursday.
