A CHARITABLE young girl has raised almost £1,000 by cycling more than 20 miles from in honour of her grandad who is battling bowel cancer.

Abigail Johnson, aged 11, of Wychbold, cycled from Cadbury World to Churchfields Farm Ice-Cream to raise money for charity Bowel Cancer UK.

She was inspired to complete the gruelling circuit in support of her 81-year-old grandad Iain Love, of Rushwick, Worcester, who loves ice-cream but cannot have any due to his current treatment for bowel cancer and secondary liver cancer.

Abigail completed the ride with her mother Sophie on Tuesday, August 21, starting from Bournville at 9.30am.

Her mother Sophie said: “We took the train from Bromsgrove to Bournville with the bikes and set off at 9.30am.

“It took us about five hours (with breaks) to complete the ride and was quite hard going along some very bumpy canal paths.

“Abigail did really well and enjoyed a large ice cream sundae (on the house) at Churchfields.

“‘Gramps’ met us at Churchfields but sadly couldn’t have ice cream as his treatment is ongoing.”

Initially the pair aimed to raise £500 but smashed their target, raking in £900 with gift aid.

Speaking on the amount, Sophie said: "We are delighted with this and would like to thank people for their support and donations."

Abigail. a former student of St John’s CE Middle Academy, Bromsgrove, is set to start at King Edward VI Five Ways School, Birmingham, next month.

Bowel Cancer UK enable and fund research, provide information and support to patients and their families, educate the public and professionals about the disease and campaign for early diagnosis.
