VOLUNTEERS have been celebrated once again at the latest Worcester Lions Club grant scheme presentation.

Representatives from several local charities and community groups gathered to receive a boost in funding from Worcester Lions Club at Mayor, Councillor Jabba Riaz's Parlour in the Guildhall.

The scheme is run in partnership with the Worcester News, which supports the club in finding good causes to receive a share of £1,500.

On this occasion 12 applications were received requesting grant support from the scheme, with 10 worthy causes chosen and being successful in receiving a share of £50 and over.

Cllr Riaz attended the event last month, and presented cheques to representatives of successful organisations who attended the event.

The money is to be spent in a variety of ways including the purchase of new books, running costs of a community transport group, help towards charity Christmas parties, a summer scheme for youngsters, an exercise class for people with reduced mobility and to help a group associated with the deaf receive money towards the expansion of a parents and toddler group.

The money is raised during Worcester Lions Club's popular festive sleigh tours held in the streets of the city during the run up to Christmas, as well as money raised by raffling Easter Eggs in local venues and from other smaller events run by the club.

Geoff Lewis, from the club, said: "Lions care about every penny that they collect and ensure that every penny counts.

"Every penny collected going to good causes - not one penny is spent on administration.

"A reminder that Worcester Lions Club are always in need of new member to enable them to carry on organising events such as this, and also providing direct support to individuals, groups and good causes in our community."
