THE daughter of a woman who died in a tragic scuba diving accident has met the team who tried to save her.

The Worcester News recently reported on Jo Durnford's family fun day, which marked 30 years since her mum, Sue, died, aged 36, in a scuba diving accident in Pembroke.

The 41-year-old from Tibberton, with the help of nine-year-old daughter, Emmie, raised £2,030 at the event, which took her overall total up to more than £8,000.

The money was raised for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and in particular the teams from two stations - David’s Lifeboat and Little & Broadhaven in Pembrokeshire.

Miss Durnford, who was aged just 11 years when the tragedy happened, recently visited Pembroke to hand over the money and met members of the crew that tried to help her mother.

“I was taken out on the boat to the site of the accident at Skomer Island to lay yellow roses on the water with the two divers who found mum's body,” said Miss Durnford.

“It was a very emotional day but the support I was given was overwhelming.

“I have carried this burden for 30 years.”

Malcolm Gray, second Coxswain from St Davids RNLI, was there on the day and remembered the incident.

“The weather was awful,” he said.

“All we knew was that there were scuba divers in the water – one a novice. The novice came to the surface and we just saw this stream of bubbles.

“We sent the diver down and there she was.”

John Scrivener, another of the divers who attended, said: “It was many years ago, I remember getting the call.

"We did a sweep of the area and found bubbles coming up from a leakage on the regulator.

“I went down and Sue was there lying on the seabed - it was a horrible experience.”

Miss Durnford added: “This was my thank you to the RNLI, I don’t know where it came from, but I had to do something.

“If this money can save one child from losing their mum, then that would be good enough for me.

“I will never be able to forget, but I have got to move on, she would not want me to be sad.

“I would like to thank everyone for their love and support.

"The fun day was all about the children and my mother would have loved that.”
