A WELL-LOVED family-run Worcester cafe is undergoing its first revamp since 1992.

After 26 years, popular cafe Poppins on The Foregate, which has been open since 1979, is being modernised.

Father-son duo, Senol Can, aged 55, and Kaan Can, aged 28, of St John’s, who have owned the restaurant since December 2002, started the refit on September 4 after a poll of 100 customers found more than 80 per cent wanted modernisation.

The work will see a complete revamp of the interior walls and floor, with new furniture, including comfy seating and new tables.

The pair also own and run Coffee Warehouse on the opposite side of the street.

Mr Kaan Can said: “It will be more modern than it was before. We did debate about keeping the layout as it was - it hasn’t changed since it opened.

“We asked our customers and they wanted a more modern design but we will keep the pictures of Worcester on the wall.

“The prices will be the same, the menu has not changed, we have the same staff and same chef.

“It is to stay up with the times really. It has been like that since 1992 and nothing major has been done with it.

“We don’t know how much it will cost - it is going to be a surprise.”

He added: “We asked 100 customers if we should keep it like it is or modernise. Over 80 per cent were for it - this did not come out of nowhere.”

The restaurant will have a ramp to allow easier access for those with wheelchairs and buggies.

The plans are subject to amendments, including moving the entrance slightly (from where it is shown on the designs) to allow for the ramp.

The Can family came to the city from Turkey in 2002 and Mr Senol Can, who is married to wife Nese Can, aged 55, has 30 years’ experience working in the catering industry.

While the work is being carried out, customers are being invited to visit Cafe Warehouse, which is serving the Poppins menu.

A sign posted on the window of the restaurant read: “Poppins restaurant will close for our refurbishment. Thank you for your custom.

“We look forward to seeing you when we reopen.”

The restaurant is set to reopen on October 3, subject to any delays.
