Fourteen winners were announced when the 15th edition of the annual ceremony took place on Thursday evening.

Held at the University of Worcester Arena, the awards were delivered in partnership by Freedom Leisure and Sport Worcester and supported by Worcester City Council, with the Worcester News as media partner.

Winners were announced and presented by Olympic medal winner and former World Champion Steve Cram CBE, while BBC Midlands Today sports presenter and reporter Dan Pallet hosted the event.

Ivan Horsfall-Turner, managing director of Freedom Leisure, said: “The awards as always were a truly humbling night and Freedom Leisure is proud to be the host because the event brings together the city’s sporting elite and allows us to honour the best, which in turn garners a great sporting legacy in the area."

Matthew Rogers, Freedom Leisure active communities manager, added: “These awards are a celebration of the city’s sporting talent in grass roots sport and we really like the fact it honours locals who have been nominated by locals.

"But we want to do more than just recognise local sporting heroes, we also want to help support them to achieve their goals – it is for this reason we also offer grants with the latest round open now for applications.”

Cllr James Stanley, chair of Worcester City Council’s communities committee, said: “The Sports Awards are an inspiring night because they acknowledge the scale of volunteering that goes on behind the scenes to make Worcester the healthy and active city it is.

"Many of the winners are not the faces you see in action on the race tracks, the pitches and the courts, but they are the people who give up their free time to make events happen and to train others to become winners.

"It’s great to see the importance of these people being recognised.”
