A NEW portrait of the dean of Worcester is set to be will be unveiled in the city's cathedral next month.

The picture of the Very Reverend Dr Peter Atkinson is the work of Malvern-based portrait painter Tania March, who is currently artist-in-residence at the cathedral.

Dr Atkinson said: "I am looking forward to seeing the finished portrait which Tania has been working on all summer."

The unveiling of the portrait will take place in the cathedral's lady chapel, where the picture was painted and which is one of the Dean’s favourite spaces in the cathedral.

The portrait will be unveiled at 4pm on Monday, October 1.

The last portrait of a dean to be painted and put on display was of Dean William Moore-Ede, who was dean from 1908 to 1934.

Artist Tania March, who is also an associate lecturer at the University of Worcester, said: "It was a privilege and a pleasure to paint the portrait of the dean, and I found him to be a very interesting subject. The most important aspect for me was not only to capture a physical likeness and a sense of his nature and personality, but also his spirituality.”

The portrait will be on display in the dean's chapel from October 2 to 15.
