A GROUP of veteran footballers raised more than £8,000 by taking part in a gruelling walk from Runnymede to Henley on Thames in aid of St Richard’s Hospice.

Worcestershire Ambassador Peter Evans decided to take on the 31-mile route from Runnymede to Henley on Thames in memory of his friend David Allan who he said was "well cared for" by the hospice.

Mr Evans, a member of Droitwich Spa Veterans Football Club, formed a team from several club members.

He said: "The idea grew and we eventually had a team of eight (including a wife and partner). One of the group, Darrell Pulver, took up the challenge in memory of his wife, Danielle, who was also cared for in the hospice.

"Our group also included former professional footballer, Dean Holdsworth, who now lives in Droitwich Spa and is a member of the football club."

The money will be donated towards the hospice’s Build 2020 appeal, which is a £1.4million project to create a bigger building at its home in Wildwood Drive, Worcester.

They took part in the walk on Saturday, September 8. The group smashed its original £4,000 target.
