MORE information has come to light on a First World War medal found in Australia.

Readers have been in touch with information on the soldier’s medal, which belonged to Private William Bertie Ballinger

According to Worcester amateur genealogist  Mark Chambers, Private Ballinger was born on May 30, 1880, in Shrivenham, Berkshire, not Worcestershire as previously thought.

The soldier was 36 years old when he was killed in action on April 20, 1916 during the attempt to relieve Kut, Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq).

He is remembered on panel 18 and 63 of the Basra Memorial, which is located on the main quay of the naval dockyard at Maqil.

He was in the ninth battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment.

Ian Miller, chief executive at Wyre Forest District Council, suggested Private Ballinger had brothers and did not get married. Danny Forde, of Victoria, Australia had the medal for over 50 years after he found it in a garage sale.
