CRICKET fans gathered at the Guildhall for a civic reception to celebrate Worcestershire's victory in the T20 Blast tournament.

After the Rapids, Worcestershire County Cricket Club's T20 team, beat Lancashire and Sussex at Edgbaston to lift the trophy on the club’s maiden Finals Day appearance, the Faithful City was in party mood – and Mayor Jabba Riaz obliged.

He held a civic reception at the Guildhall on Thursday night so fans could see the silverware on the steps before the players were honoured inside.

The Rapids showed off the trophy to crowds at 8pm, and there was live music and big screens, with BBC Hereford and Worcester’s Dave Bradley as host.

Cllr Riaz said: “This year has seen a resurgence in the white ball game. To reach the finals has been brilliant.

“Hopefully a lot of these players will go on to play for England.

“Beating Lancashire is a fantastic achievement. We should be proud of our team.”

Stephanie Lee had travelled from London with her friend Robert Williams, from Ayrshire, to support the Rapids.

She said: “Them winning the T20 is wonderful. It’s truly amazing for the county, it’s absolutely brilliant. One of the reasons we support Worcestershire is because it’s a special county."

During the reception, Rapids captain Joe Leach said: “We are truly grateful for this event and for the support we have had.

"We are extremely proud of what we have achieved – it has taken a lot of hard work and a lot of sacrifices.”

“So to walk out here tonight with this trophy, you should all be proud of yourselves.”
