A BELOVED Asda checkout worker was surprised with a leaving party to mark his retirement.

Local legend Roy Pennington, 72, celebrated his retirement with his Asda colleagues and customers, and Mayor of Worcester Jabba Riaz dropped in to show his respect.

Roy, from Worcester, has touched many lives while working for Asda since it opened six-and-a-half years ago.

Originally Roy was a porter but he moved to a more customer focused role at the checkouts to suit his bubbly personality.

Roy was so popular that many customers chose to queue up at his till despite others being free.

Talking about his surprise party, Roy said: “I could not believe the gratitude and outpouring from everyone. I am overwhelmed with the amount of love I have received.

“My colleagues who were not due to work today have come in just to see me. Customers have specially come in as they knew it was my last day.”

Roy was nominated to be in the 2015 Asda Christmas advert after thousands of people entered to take part.

Cllr Riaz said: “Every time I shop at Asda I always seek out and check if Roy is working.

“You can explain the world’s problems to Roy. He would always be smiling and offer a practical and happy solution. After a 10-minute therapy session with him you feel the world is a better place.

“Everyone who uses this store gets accustomed to his friendly smile, warm welcome and humorous jokes at the checkout.”

John Horsley, of Asda, said: “Roy is the perfect example of what every business desires."

Adam Monger, Asda's community champion, added: “Everyone in town knows Roy. He has got time for everyone.”
