YOUNG people have played a part in handing out cash grants to more than 120 groups and organisations from across Worcestershire.

Funding Lots Of Stuff (FLOSS) is a Worcestershire County Council scheme which gives 13 to 19 year olds the chance to provide their local area with activities and projects their peers will benefit from.

Over a period of three weeks, a team of 40 young assessers, aged from 11 to 21, made a short-list of the groups who had applied for government funding.

They then put their recommendations to the FLOSS management group, also comprising of young people, who made the final decisions.

Now, over 120 groups, have been given money to help them continue and develop.

In Worcester, Dines Green Football Club were given £952 to purchase their own kit and set up a football tournament, while the Rainbow Hill Dragon Boat Team were awarded £2,500.

In Wychavon, successful applicants included the Droitwich Young Parents' Project, a scheme that enables young parents to take their children on educational trips, Wychavon Children's Home, which was given £2,500 for a sensory room for young people with special needs.

In Malvern a total of 13 applications, including Hanley Youth Group which will use £2,500 to build a youth shelter out of eco friendly materials, received grants totalling £18,924.

Worcestershire County Council's cabinet member for children and young people, Councillor Liz Eyre said: "This is such a positive scheme for young adults in our county.

"FLOSS not only gives young people the chance to learn valuable skills, such as decision-making and budget management but also to form friendship and widen their vision of just what is achievable by working together."

Young people interested in getting involved in next year's decision making process or finding out more can call Gemma Benton or Rachel Adams on 01905 827734, or email Floss@worcestershire.gov.uk.
