HONORARY - Dana Denis-Smith

The founder of a major project, charting the journey of women in the legal profession since 1919, will receive an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Worcester today.

Dana Denis-Smith, an entrepreneur and lawyer, is the founder of First 100 Years, a five year project, which includes a digital museum of women’s biographies, academic conferences and public events, leading up to the 100th anniversary of the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919, which permitted women to enter the legal profession.

University of Worcester Law students have participated in the project since the School of Law was founded at the University in September 2016.

Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Sarah Greer, said: “Dana’s project has inspired all of us, and we feel privileged to have done such important work in discovering the stories of the remarkable women, and the men who helped them, in their struggle for recognition and equality. The University of Worcester is the only university whose students have published biographies in the First Hundred Years’ Digital Museum.”

Dana is also the CEO of Obelisk Legal Support, an innovative firm which offers City Lawyers the opportunity to work flexibly around family and other commitments. The firm has been widely recognised for its ground-breaking work on alternative models of working for women, and has been in The Times Top 50 Employers for Women, in both 2015 and 2016.

Before becoming an entrepreneur, Dana worked as a journalist. She later trained and qualified as a solicitor with Linklaters in London and Amsterdam.

Dana has received numerous accolades for her work including most recently being voted Legal Personality of the Year 2018 by LexisNexis, being recognised as a legal innovator by Legal Week and the Financial Times, and as entrepreneur by Management Today and Daily Mail.

HONORARY - Jo Brand

Comedian, actress and writer, Jo Brand, will receive an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Worcester today.

Jo worked as a psychiatric nurse for 10 years before entering the comedy circuit and is now one of the best-known female entertainers in the UK.

Her diverse appeal is marked by appearances on such eclectic programmes as Question Time, QI, and Countdown, as well as hosting a number of her own shows, such as Jo Brand’s Commercial Breakdown and Jo Brand’s Hot Potatoes.

A critically acclaimed writer, she has written comedy history books, novels and her autobiography Look Back In Hunger, which was followed by a second one about live performance called I Can’t Stand Up For Sitting Down.

Jo is an active ambassador for ‘Saving the NHS’ and talks passionately about the importance of supporting the growing numbers of elderly patients and those living with dementia. She actively supports the mental health agenda through her work as a comedian, where she utilises her experience to create awareness and raise funds for charities such as Sport Relief and the Alzheimer’s Society.

In 2009 she wrote and starred in the series, Getting On, which was set on a mixed hospital ward, and was partly inspired by her earlier career in nursing. Two further series followed.

Jo went on to win a 2011 BAFTA for Best Female Comedy Performance for Getting On and the series received critical acclaim.

STUDENT - Seraphim Bryant

A mother-of-four, who always dreamt of being an artist but said she “never thought it was achievable”, graduates from the University of Worcester today, having already secured five commissions for her work.

Seraphim Bryant went through her school years without realising she was dyslexic, and said she believed she just “wasn’t smart enough” to go to university.

“I left school thinking university was out of my reach,” she said. “I had my children and we lived in Canada for a few years through my husband’s work.

“But there was always something inside me, wanting to pursue my passion for art and willingness to learn.”

When she returned to the UK, Seraphim’s father persuaded her to consider university. “I attended an open day at Worcester and loved it, but I didn’t have the right qualifications to get in,” said the 36-year-old, from Kidderminster. “So I went away, re-took some of my GCSEs and did an Arts Foundation Diploma. Three years later I started at the University. Throughout that three years, the lecturers stayed in touch with me, encouraging me and inviting me to events. I felt like I was already a part of the University before I even started.”

Seraphim graduates today with a degree in Illustration and Creative Professional Writing. But it wasn’t an easy journey.

“It was difficult juggling my children and studies,” she said. “I felt selfish at first but then came to realise that it was actually good for my children to see me studying and for them to get some independence.”

At the end of her second year, Seraphim’s husband passed away. “That was really difficult,” she said. “I considered quitting but the University gave me so much support. I managed to carry on with my studies, and am so thrilled to be graduating.”

Seraphim has secured five commissions on her illustrations, including illustrating a book for fellow student, and author, Kevin Brooke, who also graduates today. She also received two awards at the University’s Degree Show 2018, the Boffy Award for Best Student in a Digital Arts Subject and the Worcestershire County Council Illustration Award.

“University has just been the most amazing experience for me,” she said. “It’s given me so many opportunities that I never would have dreamed I could have.”

STUDENT - Mark Smith

A soldier turned police officer is now beginning his third career, having re-trained as a nurse.

Mark Smith graduates from the University of Worcester today, more than 30 years after he first set out in his working life.

“I joined the Army at 16 and served in Commando forces worldwide,” said the 53-year-old, from Lydney in Gloucestershire. “I served in Northern Ireland on a bomb disposal team and then I joined Gloucestershire Police in 1991 working in various roles, including police diver, drug squad detective, custody sergeant and hostage negotiator I retired in 2015 as a sergeant stationed in Gloucester.”

He continued: “When I was coming up for retirement I thought I had a lot left to give and had experienced inequalities in society and thought nursing would allow me to make a small difference in peoples’ lives.”

Mark, a father and grandfather, decided to join the University of Worcester’s Adult Nursing programme and hasn’t looked back since.

“The University was really supportive from the very start and the course, although tough, was fantastic,” he said.

“Since completing the course I have taken up a role as a Community Staff Nurse with the Wye Valley Trust. I had completed placements in this role and have found visiting and treating people in their own homes challenging and rewarding.”

Mark said he was looking forward to today’s graduation. “It gives me an opportunity to treat my wife to a nice day out,” he said. “I think that although I completed the course my wife had to make sacrifices and put up with my anxieties and I would not have managed it without her.

“I have a short career ahead of me in nursing compared to others in my cohort I just hope I can continue to learn and develop as a community nurse.”
