THE Worcestershire Polish Association have commemorated and celebrated 100 years of independence with the community.

On Sunday, November 11 the Worcestershire Polish Association honoured Remembrance Day at the Guildhall.

Talking about the event, Tomasz Wisniewski, 38, founder of the Worcestershire Polish Association said: “November 11 is Armistice Day but also coincides with the date of Polish independence.

"This year is especially significant as it marks our centenary. Therefore, it was a day of great pride for us as Poles, but also enabled us to show respect as we remember all those who lost their lives in war.

“We celebrated Remembrance Day together with our British friends and showed our solidarity and respect to the Worcester British Veteran Club.

“The Polish 100th anniversary is a very special day for us. As there was slavery in Poland for 120 years, the end of World War One marked the beginning of independence for Poland.”

The Worcestershire Polish Association posted on Facebook: “Our project was aimed to provide 100 croissants, 100 muffins, 100 Flyers and 100 flags for the 100th anniversary of the recovery of Poland’s independence.

“The project served reconciliation of Polish history, while offering the community the taste of Polish cuisine.

“The day was met with an incredibly warm interest from the local community. Thank you all for your help, commitment and interest.”

Independence Day is a national day in Poland celebrated on November 11 to commemorate the anniversary of the restoration of Poland’s power, as the state was re-established in 1918 from the German, Austrian and Russian Empires.

Mr Wisniewski added: “Worcestershire Polish Association has been established since January this year. It was created to show our culture, our integrity with the British Community and to help businesses.”
