SIR – I would guess that I am not alone seeing the news in feeling disgust and incomprehension at the activities of those who created an effigy of the Grenfell Tower fire on Bonfire Night, set fire to it amid huge gales of laughter witnessed by others.

The British have the reputation of prizing freedom of speech, democracy and fairness.

Quite what drives such behaviour is unfathomable to me.

I would like to be proud to be British;  I shall continue to endeavour to be so;  perhaps someone could kindly assist..?
