PLANS to build five apartments on the site of a builder’s yard in St John’s looks set to be approved despite objections from locals.

An application to build two two-storey buildings on the land off McIntyre Road has faced some criticism from neighbours but council planners have embraced the redevelopment.

A report, to be discussed by the city council’s planning committee at a meeting on Thursday (November 22), said there is no objection to the loss of the small industrial site from the council’s planning policy team and the redevelopment for new apartments is “welcomed.”

Several objections were made by neighbours citing inadequate car parking, overdevelopment and the overlooking of other properties as the main causes of concern.

In a long objection to council planners, Josephine and Ian Menhinick, of McIntyre Road, said the one-bedroom apartments were being misrepresented and were in fact two-bedroom apartments masquerading as single bedroom flats.

Mr and Mrs Menhinick said if the one-bedroom design were true, they would be the only flats in Worcester with a study and dining room.

The objection also criticised the lack of green space around the apartments, as well as the condition of the access road and the problems with parking in McIntyre Road.

The objection ended: “We believe that whilst there may be an opportunity to provide residential development at this site, it should not be at the proposed density where parking and access cannot be properly and safely provided.

“It should be designed with a greater sensitivity of scale for the benefit of potential residents and the neighbourhood, rather than this scheme which seeks to maximising density presumably to maximise profit.”

Peter Baio, of Rowley Hill Street, said: “Living on the street parallel to McIntyre Road, I can vouch for the difficulties in parking or even driving down it - something I no longer do, preferring a less difficult route."
