CHRISTMAS festivities begin today as sparkling lights will be switched on as part of a fun-packed family evening.

The mayor of Worcester, Cllr Jabba Riaz, who will be switching on the lights, said: “This promises to be a happy and fun-filled occasion for the whole family, and is a great opportunity to bring the whole community together in the spirit of love not hate.”

In previous years, special guests such as Pudsey Bear and Bob the Builder have joined the city for the light switch on. Although, as it stands, it looks like the Mayor will be lighting up the city alone.

White and gold coloured lights are being specially hired by the city council to bring festive sparkle to the centre, as the Christmas shopping season begins in earnest.

Fairy lights have also being installed in trees along the High Street, creating an extra magical effect.

The event will be hosted by BBC Hereford and Worcester presenters Elliott Webb and Malcolm Boyden.

The event starts at 3.45pm from Cathedral Square, with the big switch-on taking place at 6.00pm.

The evening will include entertainment from Luke Swatman; Matt Sheehan; Dharma Burns; Alex Lleo; Woo Town Hillbillies and Worcester Concert Brass, amongst others.

After the lights have been switched on, there will be a community carol sing along for everyone to join in.

The event signals the start of Christmas late night shopping in Worcester city centre, with many shops staying open until 8.00pm on Thursdays.

The evening marks the beginning of Worcester’s Victorian Christmas Fayre which will take place from November 29 to December 2.

Security measures have been put in place ahead of this year’s Christmas lights switch-on. The Surface Guard system will be used to block road access into Cathedral Square.
