A fire engine was blocked from reaching its destination by parked cars in the Arboretum.

The crew of the vehicle were trying to get to Barry Street via Northfield Street when it became stuck due to cars parked on the junction.

Cllr Matthew Jenkins, who has put forward a plan for permit parking in the area, said: “Part of the plan is to put double yellow lines in that area specifically to stop incidents like this.

“It is a serious issue to residents and part of the reason for that is a lot of the cars parked there are not residents’ cars.”

Under the new plan, each household would be allowed three permits, with the first costing £30, the second £40 and the third £60.

Visitor scratchcards would also be available at a price of £5 for ten sheets of four permits.

Residents will get the chance to ask questions about the plans at meetings next month at Worcester Baptist Church at 7.30pm on December 10 and St George’s Church at 7.30pm on December 11.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service was unavailable for comment.

Arboretum residents took to Facebook to voice their anger at the parking situation.

On the Worcester News Facebook page, Dawn N Adie Brown said: "Being an Arboretum resident I am fed up of people using it as a free car park."

Jo Wood said: "It's been like this for years in the Arboretum...fighting for spaces.. The workers start coming into the streets at 7am looking for parking and when someone goes to work they jump in the space
