LYNN Denham has been chosen as the Labour Party's parliamentary candidate for Worcester.

The city councillor won the vote at the hustings in Worcester Sixth Form College on Saturday.

She came out on top in the all-women shortlist, which included Unite's preferred candidate Emma Randle.

Labour's previous parliamentary candidate for Worcester, Mandy Richards, was dropped after it emerged she had made 'false and vexatious' claims against MI5 and others.

Cllr Denham said: “I’m delighted to have been chosen by local Labour members here in Worcester to be the parliamentary candidate. It’s a huge honour to stand for Labour to represent Worcester in parliament.

“Worcester has been hit extremely hard by this Tory government. Wages and living standards have fallen, there is a crisis in the NHS, police numbers have been slashed to the lowest levels since the 1970s and crime is rising.

“The stakes could not be higher and the hard work starts right now. I will be visiting every street, delivering Labour’s message of hope to every home in the constituency.

“Only Labour can build a fairer Britain that works for the many, not the few – and that starts right here in Worcester.”

Ms Randle wrote on Facebook: “I just wanted to say that we fought a positive campaign and congratulations to Lynn Denham for getting elected as Worcester's prospective parliamentary candidate.

“I've met some amazing people, and have made friends for life. I have been very touched by all the endorsements and supportive messages from lovely people in and around the Worcester area.

“The next election will be critical and one where we can hopefully get rid of the Tories for a generation. I won't give up, I'll take some time out to re-group and then I'll be back.”

Robin Walker declined to comment.
