DRIVERS could be facing more motorway misery this month as evening and night-time closures will take place at junction 6 of the M5.

The latest stage of the M5 Junction 6 Improvement Plan is about to get underway, bringing with it lane closures at the Sixways roundabout for the next few months.

The latest closures will run every week day between 10pm and 6am from Monday, December 10 to Friday, December 21.

As part of the improvement scheme, the roundabout, slip roads and all the approaches will be widened, with an extra lane added to the roundabout.

Traffic signals will be put on the A449 and the A4538 Pershore Lane south approaches.

To complete this work safely, Highways England say the following traffic management measures will be put in place:

- Narrow Lanes in place on the roundabout and all approaches.

- 50mph speed limit in place reducing down to 30mph.

- Barriers in place on the M5 and A4440 approaches.

- There may be daytime off-peak (9.30am to 3.30pm) lane closures and night-time off-peak (8pm to 6am) closures.

The improvement scheme is aimed at reducing congestion, improving journey times and boosting the region’s infrastructure.

Cllr Alan Amos, county cabinet member for highways, said "Because of their overrun, Highways England are now looking at different ways of working in order to keep any further delays to a minimum.

"The balance is between getting the work finished more quickly and reducing the road capacity. We will continue to press Highways England to keep to schedule to minimize any further disruption to the public."

Diversion routes will be in place for any full carriageway closures.

Highways England has apologised for the disruption. The programme was expected to be finished by the end of 2018, with Highways England saying it would benefit commuters in the long term.
