TESCO has reportedly agreed to pay a £15,000 repair bill for a vehicle damaged when diesel containing water was sold at a Worcester fuel station.

A local businessman told the Worcester News that the supermarket has agreed to pay for the repairs to his Porsche Macan which broke down while he and his family were returning from a holiday, not long after he filled up at the fuel station at the Warndon superstore.

Four motorists have reported damage to their vehicles after filling up at the garage, and Tesco has admitted "an isolated case of water in one of the diesel storage tanks".

He said: “We were coming home from a holiday and we jumped in our car only for it to breakdown within half a mile of Birmingham airport, leaving us stranded on the inside lane of the A45. That is pretty scary with 70 mph cars coming up behind you.”

The 4x4 was recovered and taken to Porsche Solihull and the cause was found to be contaminated fuel.

The car was filled with diesel at the Tesco in Mill Wood Drive, Warndon on November 28, which coincides with the dates given by other motorists affected by the contaminated fuel.

“We have only had the car for six weeks so it is extremely frustrating,” he added.

The engine and gearbox of the car have to be replaced as a result of the contamination and the businessman said he had spoken to Tesco’s intervention team, who admitted the petrol had come from one of their pumps and agreed to pay towards the repair.

A spokesman for Tesco said: “Our investigation has found an isolated case of water in one of the diesel storage tanks at our Worcester Warndon Superstore and we are in contact with and supporting the small number of affected customers. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Tesco initially said there was no reason to believe there was a problem with any of the fuel at the Warndon store after several motorists complained about engine trouble after using the pumps, but admitted there was an issue after an investigation.

A similar problem was reported at a Tesco in Bristol earlier this year.
