FLUTE Days’ was an inspiring two -day flute playing event run, by London trained professional flautists and teachers, Mel Orriss and Joss Campbell, that took place last weekend at King’s, Worcester.

A spokesman said: “Mel and Joss are two of the country’s leading flute ensemble coaches who run workshops around the UK and overseas. The event was open to flute players of all ages in the community who were keen to improve their group-playing skills.

“As well as the opportunity to play as part of a massed flute “choir” – there were nearly 60 flautists participating over the two days - there was also the rare chance to have a go on all the flutes of the flute family – alto, bass and the monster-sized contrabass flute which plays 2 octaves lower than the regular ‘concert’ flute.”

The spokesman added: “These instruments, that Mel and Joss brought along with them were used throughout the days alongside the regular flutes and were included in the end of day concerts which were held at the school.

“Just Flutes, the largest flute retailer in Europe set up a trade stand for the weekend which attracted much interest with its enviable flute range as well as some very state-of-the-art, and colourful, plastic flutes, piccolos and even a plastic bass flute. They also brought an impressive range of gadgets and gizmos which was of great appeal to the more geeky flute players among us.

“Nearly all the music played over the course of the weekend had a Christmas flavour which appealed particularly to the younger participants. Festive jumpers, accessories and tinsel decorated flutes were all positively encouraged! Overall, participants came away with a real sense of achievement, having gained some excellent playing tips.”
