A MARKET could be returning to a town after it was closed down a year ago.

Barry Knott, a Droitwich resident thinks a market is needed again, to rejuvenate the town following news of popular sweet shop, Izzy Wizzy Sweetiz closing down. in December. Mr Knott said: “When you have got a street market, it brings people in, and while they are there they have a look round at what else is there. They need to bring it back, and do what Bromsgrove does which is have a market every week. It will help."

"People from Droitwich are going over there (Bromsgrove) because they have got more going on."

"They got rid of our market stalls a year ago, but market stalls bring people from other cities into your town."

"Shops seem to do well, they seem to thrive." Mr Knott said.

"That is what they need to do in Droitwich, rather than spend money on parks which just get vandalised. They need to do more fayres and street fayres in Droitwich to get people to come to the town."

"Droitwich has become an old peoples town, the council has got to wake up, he added.

Mr Knott said: "There used to be a market in Victoria Square. It was only a small thing, with DVDs and some clothes."

"Once a year they have the street market and people flock from everywhere. When they had the classic car show, people would flock from everywhere to see it."

It has been 12 months since the Droitwich Charter Market ended. It ran every Friday for three years. Now the council are hopeful it will return.

Droitwich Town Clerk, Mark Keld said: “Unfortunately the operator retired. He gave notice for personal reasons. We have been unable to get an alternative contractor in place since then, although we are looking at a couple of options to get it re-instated this year. There is a possibility that we will be able to re-introduce the Charter Market, possibly in the spring or on-wards, if the negotiations are positive.”

In December the towns last independent sweet shop Izzy Wizzy Sweetiz closed down.

Mr Knott said: "I hate to see empty places in Droitwich, it's better to get something rather than nothing. There are so many empty buildings."
