"A BRILLIANT success" – that's how a 'trail of light' art project in a Worcester community has been described.

Around 40 households and various community organisations contributed to the Love the Arboretum project by putting illuminated artwork in their windows and gardens.

Among the eye-catching displays for the February event was artwork celebrating spring, a homage to English artist Laurence Stephen Lowry, and an aquarium.

Local artist Kate Brookes, from Worcestershire Resource Exchange, installed light sculptures at key locations including an illuminated washing line and clothes in Westbury Pocket Park, and a bright creation by the old swimming pool in Sansome Walk.

Jane Moorhouse and the Arboretum Residents’ Association organised the event as she wanted to give her neighbours a reason to get out and do something during the winter.

Mrs Moorhouse, a resident, received a Worcester City Council grant to be able to launch the project.

“We were overwhelmed by the number of people who took part," she said. "It was fantastic.”

A statement on the Arboretum Residents’ Association Facebook page added: “So many beautiful windows in the Arboretum.

“Thank you so much to everyone who took part and to everyone who has been out and about to see your neighbours’ creativity.

“What a brilliant event and what a talented bunch.”

Commenting on the post, Emma Buckingham wrote: “What a gorgeous display. “Super overwhelmed by the neighbourhood's talent, creativity and an evening full of surprises – well done to all. It truly was impressive.”

Darren Smith added: “Was an incredible evening with stunning displays. Over 300 people came to pick up maps and explore the delights. Well done to all who organised the event and who took part, creating such a fab vibe.”

Arboretum city councillor Joy Squires praised the "fabulous event", adding: “Wonderful to see so many people enjoying and celebrating this amazing corner of Worcester. Well done to everyone involved, especially those who made such great efforts with their windows and gardens and to Kate for the fantastic light installations on the canal and at the swimming pool.”
