AN ‘INSPIRATIONAL’ head teacher has been nominated for a Worcestershire Education Award.

Nic Ross from New College Worcester, in Whittington Road, has been nominated for Head Teacher of the Year Award.

Miss Ross, aged 53 said: “It feels so lovely to be nominated. I am incredibly flattered. You come in everyday and do your job at the very best. It is amazing to be acknowledged, I am over the moon.”

New College Worcester is a residential school for young people aged 11 to 19 who are blind or partially sighted.

Every pupil at the school has a tailored programme to meet their individual needs. The pupils are encouraged to do their own cooking and washing which promotes independent living.

Miss Ross said: “There is a huge amount of activities on offer which play a key role in the development of every student’s confidence. There are no barriers as we want to promote the pupil’s confidence and provide them with plenty of opportunities.

“They live like a university student and this helps them develop a high level of independent skills and prepares them for life after college.”

Miss Ross has been head teacher at the school for two years, after spending 26 years in mainstream schools.

Miss Ross added: “It was a big change moving over from a mainstream school, however it was a fantastic move. The children are outstanding, and they make me proud on a daily basis.”

The children are encouraged to get involved in an array of activities, such as skiing, climbing, paddle boarding, ice skating and swimming.

Speaking about HRH The Princess Royal’s visit to the school on February 6, Miss Ross said: “It was the most brilliant day. She is a highly accomplished lady and she took her time and spoke to pretty much every student and made them feel confident.”

In her nomination, Rhiannon Jones wrote: “Nic has been the most inspirational head I've ever worked for. She fights so hard not only for her staff but for every student."

In the most recent Ofsted inspection in March 2018, New College Worcester received an ‘outstanding’ rating.
