TRIBUTES have been paid after a much-loved cricket club chairman died.

Dozens of people have posted their tributes to John Ridlinton, who was chairman of Rushwick Cricket Club and a hugely popular figure within the organisation.

Mr Ridlinton, who lived in St John's, died on February 21, aged 75, and was being cared for at St Richard's Hospice in Worcester.

He was a beloved husband to Margaret and father to Mark and Helen.

A statement on the cricket club's Facebook page, from President David Bryant, read: "It is with great sadness that I must tell you that our chairman for more than 40 years, John Ridlinton, passed away peacefully this morning.

"Despite retiring from playing cricket for Rushwick CC years ago, John’s ongoing dedication to the club was immeasurable: whether serving as chairman or as the genial gentleman who mowed the outfield or served drinks behind the bar, John was committed to ensuring that the club prospered and that its members were happy.

"‘Integrity’ is a word that fitted John like a glove.

"John was an extremely likeable man, and someone you could always turn to for a favour, some good advice or just a friendly chat. We have missed his warmth up at the club since his illness took hold more than a year ago, and we will continue to miss him over the years to come.

"R.I.P. ‘John Rid’, a great friend to, and pillar of, Rushwick CC. As a club, we send our condolences and prayers to Margaret, Mark and Helen at this very sad time."

The announcement was met with a flood of tributes to Mr Ridlinton.

Richard Hunt posted: “A very sad day, he was so inspirational and had such an influence in my younger days. He introduced me to cricket at Rushwick CC which I will forever be grateful for, he was my captain for many years whilst playing skittles for the Kingfishers.

“He even got me a job in the summer holidays, driving me to and from Stratford.

“A true gent who will be sorely missed by everyone."

Mr Ridlinton’s funeral is at Worcester Crematorium on Monday, March 18 at 2.30pm. All are welcome to say farewell and celebrate his life.

Donations will be taken for St Richard’s Hospice.
