IT’S a wing and a prayer for vicar Jo Musson as she does the most terrifying thing she has ever attempted in her life to raise cash for her church.

In less than 80 days the Reverend Musson, vicar of Saint George’s Church, Worcester and St John Baptist, Claines, will be strapped to the top wing of a 1940’s Boeing Stearman Biplane, travelling at 120mph and reaching a height of roughly two-and-a half times that of Worcester Cathedral tower as she flies over RFC Rendcomb Airfield in Cirencester.

The date, Wednesday, May 15, is imprinted on her mind because the 10 minute flight will put all her nerves to the test, as she is frightened of flying and terrified of heights.

The 59-year-old is collecting sponsorship money for the Claines 20/20 Vision project in order to raise funds to make Claines Church more visitor-friendly – adding toilets, making the church more accessible and installing facilities to allow better hospitality.

And 10 per cent of her sponsorship is also be given to the cancer charity, Bloodwise.

Rev Musson, who is married to Adrian and has three daughters and five grandchildren, said: “This is a real challenge for me.

“I was challenged to do something daring by a friend who has been through a lot herself after a diagnosis of cancer and this was her suggestion. I really want to rise to her challenge, and in the process get the Claines’ project off the ground. We desperately need better facilities for the hundreds of people who come to Claines Church every month.

“I won’t be going for any dazzling sequences of acrobatic manoeuvres, or loop the loops; my only ambition is to cling on for dear life and pray like crazy.”

“I know God has given me the courage to face some very challenging situations in the 10 years since my Ordination and I trust God will give me the courage to do this too.”

Rev Musson has set up a fundraising page ahead of the flight on May 15. To sponsor her visit justgiving.com/fundraising/rev-jo.

Alternatively donations can be sent in the post to the Parish Office, Cornmeadow Lane, Claines, WR3 7NY, marking them ‘Rev Jo Wing Walk.’
