A COUNCIL says it will launch an investigation into a taxi driving the wrong way down a city road.

Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council confirmed that it would examine video of a taxi driving towards oncoming traffic in New Road, Worcester.

Brookfleet Cars, based in Rowley Regis, near Stourbridge, confirmed that one of its drivers was involved in the incident, on Wednesday, and had been given an official warning.

A company spokesman added that the driver had pulled out of the Premier Inn car park, realised he was going the wrong way and then turned around in New Road, before the near-miss took place.

They said that the driver, who had never driven in Worcester before, was sorry for his actions.

Councillor Elaine Costigan, cabinet member for public health and protection at Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council, said: “The taxi licensing team has been informed and will investigate the matter.”

Sales manager Mark Eriksen captured the near-miss on his dashcam and reported the incident to West Mercia Police.

He called for the driver to be stripped of his taxi licence as he was endangering lives.

West Mercia Police was unavailable for comment.
