Opera Worcester says it is "delighted to field yet another aspiring young singer" as part of its cast for this year’s double-bill of Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci.

Laurie Standish Hayes has recently accepted a scholarship as a vocal student to the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama to begin in September.

A spokesman said: "Malvern-based Laurie is 22 and up until now has worked part-time, devoting the rest of his energies to pursuing his musical career.

"He has taken part in many choral performances including Karl Jenkins' 'The Armed Man' at the Royal Albert Hall, Fauré's 'Requiem' at the Worcester Cathedral and has sung solo pieces from Handel's 'Messiah' with Holy Trinity Augmented choir."

Last year Laurie sang the relatively minor role of ‘Don Curzio’ in The Marriage of Figaro for Opera Worcester, but this year sees him making his debut in the challenging baritone role of ‘Tonio’ in I Pagliacci.

Laurie said: “This has been a great opportunity for me to learn, and develop my knowledge and vocal skills before beginning full time study in Cardiff in the autumn."

Musical Director Sue Black added: “We are delighted to be able to offer these sorts of opportunities to young singers. We have to be mindful that we are working with immature voices and great care has to be taken, but I am sure Laurie has learnt a great deal from the experience which will benefit him in his forthcoming studies.”

Tickets are now available for the Opera double -bill of Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci which runs at The Swan Theatre from May 2 to May 4.
