NOMINATIONS are flooding in as another school has been nominated for Primary School of the Year.
Stanley Road Primary School has been nominated for a Worcestershire Education Award.
Anne Potter, who has been headteacher at the school since 2004, says: “It’s lovely to be nominated as Primary School of the Year and to know that all the hard work put in by everyone at Stanley Road is recognised.”
Ms Potter says the children are expected to work hard, however they should also have fun, adding: “There is a wide variety of opportunities on offer in school from sports to arts and cultural visits and we have a variety of adults coming in to school to broaden those opportunities.”
Each term the school has a whole-school event. That includes the autumn term performance which is initiated by staff but by the time of the performance it is run by children, from costumes to prompts and backstage organisation as well as full light and sound.
Ms Potter added: “It is always very well received by the parents who are often amazed by the confidence of their own children in a large production in front of a full house.”
The summer term brings the annual Arts Festival where Stanley Road invite local schools and members of the community to a celebration of art. It also gives the school the opportunity to share the sporting successes of the year and showcase the children’s athletic skills on sport-day. In recognition of the variety of sports on offer, the school has been awarded SportsMark Gold for the second consecutive year.
Ms Potter said: “The ethos of the school is a friendly, warm and inclusive one. Our intention is for every child to achieve to the best of their ability: to experience new things, be exposed to a variety of opportunities and gain in confidence so that they are prepared for every life event."
“We know that we are educating the future generation, but we don’t know what the future holds so we’re preparing our children to be inquisitive, resilient and have the knowledge and skills that will prepare them for that unknown future so that they are successful in this school, the next one, their working lives and in all their relationships.”
Philosophy was introduced into the curriculum this year as well as the debating club, in which Stanley Road Primary won the Worcestershire and Herefordshire debating competition.
Ms Potter added: “The children love it and it really encourages them to speak in full and detailed sentences and to express their views.”
Dawn Hyam, who sent in the nomination said: “The school supports all children of all abilities and encourages them personally, socially and academically. This promotes each child as an individual and ensures they are achieving their optimum at all times as well-rounded individuals.”
