IN what kind of society does a mother end up feeling forced into prostitution in order to feed her children.
In a heart breaking story today we learn about a mum who was so desperate and scared after she didn't receive her universal credit, that she felt she had no alternative.
The pathetic bureaucracy of the current system meant that the mum of three had to suffer a delay in her first payment, all because she made a mistake on her application form.
Universal credit is in desperate need of reform. Up and down the country people are turning to friends, family and food banks to survive.
Staff from a local food bank told me last year their stocks had become dangerously low as more families had been referred to them as well as people who are working but are on low incomes. Even some of those who are working still cannot make ends meet.
I fully commend the brave woman for sharing her story. I sincerely hope she is getting the support she needs now, financially and emotionally. No one should have to go through an experience like that and put themselves in possible danger, just to put food on the table.
